Suzy's ancestors came to Tulsa for two different reasons, a Race Riot and Oil. Suzy's maternal great-grandfather, Maurice Willows, was the Red Cross Relief Director who came to Tulsa the evening of the infamous 1921 Race Riot to set up the relief efforts. He felt the need to stay in Tulsa to help rebuild and brought his family down from Denver to live shortly after he arrived. His efforts during 1921 included raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to build a hospital (which is now the Morton Center, but was originally named the Maurice Willows Hospital) and to rebuild burned businesses and houses caused by the Race Riot. His efforts directly helped Tulsa to rebuild and to start the healing process. Many wealthy oilmen opened their checkbooks to Maurice and they donated heavily to his efforts. Maurice Willows was posthumously awarded honors from many Greenwood District groups and African-American Civic groups for his compassionate role and financial assistance in the aftermath of the country's worst race riot to date. One of Maurice's daughters met a man in Tulsa that she fell in love with and married. Maurine Willows married Forrest Hower a few years later and they had three children together and raised them here in Tulsa, even after the rest of the Willows moved to California. My mother is one of those three Hower children, Jean Belding, who was a real estate Broker in Tulsa for over 40 years. The oldest of the three Hower children is Bob Hower, who was a local TV Anchorman for many years with ABC/KTUL TV. Our family has always given everything we could to promote Tulsa and to benefit Tulsans. My father's side of the family were part owners in the William's Brothers Oil Company and were always very philanthropic in the Tulsa area as well. Guy Conners, Suzy's paternal great uncle, helped bring the William's Brothers oil company through the depression and on to become a booming business. With his own money put forth to drill wells and his talent for finding areas rich in oil, he became a part owner in William's and remained with them to his death in the late 1960's. The philanthropy of Guy and Evelyn Conners can still be felt in the City of Tulsa more than 50 years later.
Suzy's hope is to continue to promote Tulsa and pass that rich heritage on for generations to come.
